The ultrasound is usually carried out by applying a probe to the abdomen, though it can also be completed by inserting a probe into the vagina. During this examination, we make sure that the pregnancy is progressing normally and that everything is as we would expect at this stage. This examination is particularly useful for those expectant mothers who have experienced periods of pain typical in early pregnancy or bleeding. It is also important for expectant mothers who have experienced miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or serious developmental abnormalities in the fetus in previous pregnancies.
